Gaining 2 kg of Fat in a Day Is Physically Impossible
You step on the scale in the morning and it reads 2 kg heavier than yesterday. For plenty of people, that is the exact moment diet motivation collapses. Do the arithmetic calmly, though, and it becomes clear that putting on 2 kg of body fat in a single day is physically impossible.
Storing 1 kg of fat requires a surplus of roughly 7,200 kcal. Two kilograms would take 14,400 kcal. Given that an adult woman burns somewhere around 1,800 to 2,000 kcal a day, taking in 14,400 kcal beyond that within one day would be hard to manage even camped in an all-you-can-eat buffet from open to close. Almost all of an overnight 2 kg jump, in other words, is fluid moving around rather than fat.
The Four Fluid Factors That Move the Scale
Glycogen and the water bound to it
Carbohydrate you eat gets stored as glycogen in the muscles and the liver, and glycogen has the property of binding roughly 3 to 4 g of water per gram. Someone who has been restricting carbohydrate has near-empty stores, so a single meal containing 300 g of carbohydrate is taken up largely as glycogen. Store 300 g and the water attached to it comes to 900 to 1,200 g, for a combined weight gain of 1.2 to 1.5 kg. That is not fat; it is a temporary energy deposit.
Salt and sodium
Eat a lot of salt and the body holds on to water in order to keep the sodium concentration of the blood steady. This is the mechanism behind the higher number on the morning after ramen or a heavily seasoned restaurant meal. The more sodium there is in the body, the more water is retained to dilute it. A single salty meal is enough to leave the scale 0.5 to 1.5 kg higher the next morning, and the excess sodium and water are normally excreted over two to three days.
Swings across the hormonal cycle
For women, the hormonal shifts of the menstrual cycle have a large effect on weight. Progesterone rises from ovulation through to the days before menstruation, promoting fluid retention, and gaining 1 to 3 kg during the week before a period is not unusual. Once menstruation begins, progesterone drops sharply, the surplus water is excreted, and weight returns to where it was. Without knowing this cyclical pattern, it is easy to read the same week every month as having got fat, and this is one of the places where hormonal balance and lifestyle meet most visibly.
Stress and cortisol
Psychological stress and short sleep raise cortisol secretion. Cortisol promotes sodium reabsorption in the kidneys, and fluid retention follows. When weight climbs during a punishing stretch at work, the cause is often not only eating more but stress-driven water retention.
What "1 kg of Fat = 7,200 kcal" Actually Tells You
A kilogram of fat tissue is not pure fat alone; it also contains water and connective tissue. A gram of pure fat carries 9 kcal of energy, but the usable energy in a kilogram of adipose tissue is put at about 7,200 kcal. With that figure you can work backwards and ask whether a given change on the scale could have been fat at all.
To lose 0.5 kg of fat in a week, for instance, you need a deficit of about 500 kcal a day (7,200 divided by 2, divided by 7, is roughly 514 kcal). Turn it around and a 500 kcal daily surplus kept up for two full weeks adds only about 1 kg of fat. Gaining 2 kg of fat in a day would demand a surplus of 14,400 kcal, a number ordinary eating never reaches.
Know What a Body Composition Scale Can and Cannot Do
The weak point of bioelectrical impedance
Home body composition scales estimate body fat percentage using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). A faint current is passed through the body, total body water is inferred from the electrical resistance, and body fat percentage is calculated from there. The method is, however, heavily swayed by how much water the body is holding.
When fluid retention is high, after a salty meal or before a period, body fat percentage tends to read low; in a dehydrated state, straight after waking or after exercise, it tends to read high. The number on a body composition scale, in other words, is largely reporting the day's hydration status rather than accurately tracking real gains and losses of body fat.
Getting real value out of it anyway
To make the numbers useful, standardize the measuring conditions. Weigh yourself every morning immediately after waking and using the toilet, in the same clothes or none at all. Do not celebrate or despair over a single day's figure; read the trend through a one-week or two-week moving average. If the moving average is falling, body fat is trending down whatever the daily noise does. How to Weigh Yourself Properly
Timing and frequency
Ideally, weigh yourself at the same time every day. The most stable reading comes right after waking and using the toilet, before breakfast. Evening and post-meal readings swing by 0.5 to 1.5 kg with the weight of food and fluid, which makes them unsuitable for comparison.
Judge by the weekly average
Record your weight daily and work out the average for the week, then compare last week's average against this week's to see whether the direction is downward. Habits That Reduce Fluid Swings
Keep salt intake steady
The WHO recommends that adults keep salt intake below 5 g a day, equivalent to less than 2 g of sodium (WHO fact sheet, as of May 2026). Average intake among Japanese adults is put at around 10 g a day, roughly double that guide. There is no need to cut salt abruptly, but not letting it swing wildly from day to day is what keeps weight readings stable. Why drinking water matters
Paradoxically, taking in enough water reduces fluid retention. When the body senses dehydration, secretion of the antidiuretic hormone vasopressin increases and the body starts hoarding water. A steady 1.5 to 2 L of fluid a day tells the body that water is plentiful, which makes it readier to let the surplus go.
Not Being Ruled by the Number
Weight is only one indicator of health. At the same weight, a person with plenty of muscle and a low body fat percentage and a person with little muscle and a high body fat percentage look nothing alike and are in different states of health. Build the habit of assessing your body across several measures: not just the figure on the scale but the reflection in the mirror, how your clothes fit, changes in stamina, the values in your blood work.
