Why You Feel Eyes on Your Back - What the Sense of Being Watched Really Is

You Turn Around and Someone Really Was Looking

You are reading a book on the train. Something makes you feel watched, so you lift your head. Your eyes meet those of the person in the seat diagonally ahead, and they immediately look away.

An experience like this leaves the impression that there is a special sense for detecting a gaze. Cultures across the world speak of the sense of being watched as a sixth sense.

Check the structure of the body, however, and there are no visual receptors in your back. Nor does a gaze physically carry energy that reaches your skin. And yet the sensation occurs. Here we take apart what is actually happening.

What Peripheral Vision Picks Up

The first thing to fix is that human visual field is wider than people assume.

When you look straight ahead, the field of both eyes spreads far to the left and right. At the edges, the ability to resolve detail and color drops, but sensitivity to motion alone stays high even out there. The periphery of the visual field functions as the region whose job is to report that something moved.

So as long as the person is not directly behind you but diagonally behind or to the side, vision is obtaining information. Someone lifted their head, changed the direction of their body, moved slightly in order to look your way. Such movement is detected at the edge of the field and arrives as a signal that something turned toward you, with the details unresolved.

From the inside it feels like knowing without looking. What you see at the center rises into awareness, but movement caught at the periphery pulls your attention before it becomes conscious, so it is experienced as an intuition with no visible grounds.

Changes in Sound and Air

Routes other than vision are also at work.

The rustle of clothing, a chair creaking, a shift in breathing, the sound of legs recrossing. When a person directs attention your way, it usually comes with some kind of movement. The sound that movement makes may be faint, but it gets processed as a sound that carries meaning.

In a crowded place, air movement and changes in temperature also become information. If someone approaches, the airflow changes. None of these registers on its own, but when several weak cues point in the same direction, the integrated result raises the judgment that someone is there.

This integration happens automatically, and only the conclusion reaches awareness. Because the conclusion arrives without an itemized breakdown of the cues, it is experienced as a sensation that cannot be explained.

You Only Remember the Hits

Up to here we can explain that the sensation has grounds. But the strong impression that turning around always reveals someone looking is manufactured by a different factor.

People do not remember the times they turned around and nobody was looking. Events in which nothing happened leave no trace in memory. The times your eyes met, on the other hand, leave an impression. The experience of a prediction landing carries emotion with it, and emotion fixes memories in place.

Furthermore, the act of turning around can itself produce the result. If you swing around abruptly, that movement is detected at the edge of the other person's visual field, and they look at you. Your eyes met because they looked after you turned, which does not establish that they were looking before you turned.

These two effects overlap, and the sense you are left with is of a precision far above the real hit rate. If this rings true for you, counting the times you turned around and found nothing will change the impression.

Why It Was Useful to Our Ancestors

The reason this machinery survives despite producing false alarms is thought to be the size of the penalty for a miss.

Failing to detect a predator or an enemy closing in from behind carries a loss that bears directly on survival. Turning around when nothing is there, by contrast, costs only a little time and effort. In an environment with that asymmetry, a setting that responds whenever there is doubt comes out ahead.

The same logic applies to other phenomena of sensing. Thinking you saw a human shape in the dark; mistaking a noise for footsteps. In every case the setting has been tilted toward avoiding a miss. The mechanism that finds faces in everything can be explained from the same asymmetry.

When the Feeling Gets Too Strong

This sensation is normal function, but past a certain degree it affects daily life.

The feeling of being watched persists every time you walk outside; you are convinced a particular person is monitoring you; you sense a gaze even inside your own home. States like these mean either that the work of picking up cues from the surroundings has intensified, or that heavy self-referential meaning is being supplied to the cues that get picked up.

During periods of strong anxiety this tendency temporarily increases. Sustained tension raises the share of attention devoted to scanning the surroundings, which increases the number of cues collected. In that case, addressing the anxiety itself is more coherent than addressing the gaze.

On the other hand, when the conviction is firm and the sensation is experienced as something you can produce grounds for, it becomes a matter for professional consultation. If there is an effect on daily life, if going out has become difficult, if you cannot sleep, consult a psychiatrist or a mental health clinic. Handling it at an early stage leaves more options open than putting the decision off.

That said, occasionally feeling eyes on your back is evidence that your body is keeping watch over a wide surround. When you turn around and find nothing, taking it as a record of the machinery doing its job is enough.
