Why Rainy Days Make You Sleepy - How Light and Air Pressure Affect Your Body Clock

The Sound of Rain Makes You Drowsy

It is dark outside the window. You can hear the rain. Your eyes are open, but your body refuses to leave the bed. Even when you force yourself up, the morning passes in a haze, and before you notice it is past noon.

Treat this state as weak willpower and there is nothing you can do about it. But behind rainy-day sleepiness sit two physical factors: the quantity of light and the pressure of the air. Neither is something you choose, and the machinery in your body that responds to them works in a place that has nothing to do with will.

How Much Darker Is an Overcast Sky?

The first thing worth grasping is the difference in brightness. Because the human eye adapts across an enormous range, you perceive the gap between a clear sky and a cloudy one as merely "a little dim." Compare the actual illuminance, though, and the difference changes by orders of magnitude.

Outdoors on a clear day is several to more than ten times brighter than outdoors under cloud. Indoors is far darker still, so spending a rainy day inside means the light your body receives falls dramatically compared with stepping outside on a clear day. Your visual sense reports "bright enough" while the light actually reaching your body clock falls short. That gap is the starting point.

How Light Shuts Off Melatonin

One of the substances involved in regulating sleepiness is melatonin. It is secreted heavily at night and tilts the body toward rest. The trigger that suppresses it is light entering the eye.

When you take in strong light in the morning, that information travels from the retina to the part of the brain that keeps time, and melatonin secretion stops. This switch is what builds the rise into wakefulness. When morning light is weak, the switching signal stays weak as the morning proceeds, and drowsiness lingers.

Rainy-day sleepiness becomes easier to understand as a state in which you have entered the day with that switch only partly thrown. You can get up with an alarm clock, but the internal switch does not advance without light. That is why the drowsiness persists after you are already awake.

What Happens When Serotonin Drops

Light bears not only on alertness but on mood and motivation. When the amount of light you receive during the day falls, the workings of the neurotransmitters involved in emotional stability change. Sleepiness arriving together with a sense of "I do not want to do anything" happens because the alertness system and the mood system share the same light input.

This also explains why so many people experience rainy-day malaise not as "just being sleepy" but as "having no drive." There is no need to treat drowsiness and flagging motivation as separate problems. Both share a single entrance: a shortage of light.

Air Pressure and the Parasympathetic System

The other factor is air pressure. As a low-pressure system approaches, the body adjusts its autonomic nervous system to cope with the environmental change. In that process the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches wavers, and stretches of time tilted toward rest can slip into the middle of the day.

When the inner ear senses the pressure change and the resulting signals become slightly disordered, the brain devotes processing to sorting them out. The load of resolving a sensory mismatch does not register as clear pain or discomfort; it surfaces as fatigue and heaviness instead.

Worth noting here is that light and pressure are independent factors. On a cloudy day with stable pressure the sleepiness is mild, while on a day when pressure drops sharply you can feel heavy even under a clear sky. Which of the two your own drowsiness responds to more strongly becomes visible once you keep a record.

Designing a Rainy Day

Since you can change neither the light nor the pressure, the response has to run in the direction of changing what you do that day.

The measure whose effect is easiest to see is taking in outdoor light early. Even under cloud, outdoors is far brighter than indoors, so carrying an umbrella and walking for about ten minutes changes the quantity of light that enters. If you cannot get out, make time to sit near a window. Illuminance falls off steeply as you move a meter away from the glass, so staying close is the point.

Next comes reordering the day's plan. Cram work that demands concentration into the early morning and it goes badly, which drags your self-assessment down with it. On days when rain is forecast, pushing tasks that require judgment or invention later and putting work with a settled procedure first fits the conditions better.

And there is the option of not fighting the drowsiness too hard. Slotting in a short nap can raise the quality of your afternoon more than battling sleepiness all the way through. Knowing how to time a short nap so it actually helps makes that call easier.

Getting sleepy on a rainy day is the result of your body reading external conditions correctly. Rather than treating the drowsiness itself as a fault, build the day on the premise that your own capacity shifts with the weather. That approach gets more done than resisting and wearing yourself out.
