Breadcrumbing
Stringing someone along with sporadic, suggestive messages and small signs of interest, with no intention of letting the relationship progress. A sibling concept of ghosting from the dating app era.
What Is Breadcrumbing?
Breadcrumbing is the practice of keeping someone on the hook by doling out small, suggestive signals of interest, like the trail of breadcrumbs in the fairy tale, without any intention of letting the relationship actually progress. Typical crumbs: the "hey, was just thinking of you" message that arrives right when you were about to move on, a steady stream of story reactions and likes with nothing behind them, and the "we should grab dinner sometime" that never turns into a date. Where ghosting cuts every thread at once, breadcrumbing deliberately maintains one thin thread that never quite breaks.
Why People Breadcrumb
The motives fall into a few types. The most common is option-keeping: holding onto someone who is not a priority but feels too useful to release. There is the validation-supply type, which uses an admirer's responses as fuel for self-esteem. And there is an unintentional type, where someone keeps giving vague answers to avoid the awkwardness of declining, and drifts into the pattern. Regardless of intent, the structure is the same: the receiver's time and feelings are consumed with no prospect of progress.
Why It Is Hard to Escape
What makes breadcrumbing sticky is that the reward is not zero. Contact resumes just as it seems about to die out, and a warm message occasionally lands. This unpredictable, occasional reward is intermittent reinforcement, which behavioral psychology has long shown sustains behavior more powerfully than regular rewards. The receiver hangs in suspense, swinging between hope and disappointment with every notification. It is not the fact that nothing has progressed that clouds judgment, but the possibility that "next time it might."
How It Differs from Related Concepts
| Concept | Pattern | Difference from breadcrumbing |
|---|---|---|
| Ghosting | All contact ends without explanation | Opposites: cutting the thread vs. keeping it thin but alive |
| Situationship | You actually keep meeting, but the relationship stays undefined | Breadcrumbing involves almost no real interaction |
| Slow replies from a busy person | Replies are slow but concrete, and plans actually happen | With breadcrumbing, plans never materialize |
How Can You Tell It Is Breadcrumbing?
The most reliable check is the concreteness test. Instead of "sometime," propose a specific slot: "how about Saturday afternoon?" A sincere person either commits or offers an alternative. A breadcrumber deflects, cancels at the last minute, or gives enthusiastic replies that never become plans. If two or three attempts produce nothing, take the behavior, not the words, as the answer. Part of dating app fatigue comes precisely from carrying several of these suspended connections at once.
What to Do Once You Notice
First, slow down your reply speed and reclaim the rhythm of your own life; the more reflexively you respond to notifications, the tighter the intermittent reinforcement loop becomes. Next, decide what you actually want (progress or an ending) and, if you want progress, run the concreteness test. If cutting a vague thread yourself stirs up guilt, setting healthy boundaries helps. And if there is already a relationship you care about, redirect the attention the breadcrumber consumes toward deepening the relationship in front of you.
