Hyaluronic Acid in Skincare - How It Works, Limitations, and How to Use It Right

About 2 min read

What Hyaluronic Acid Actually Is

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan naturally present in skin, joints, and eyes. It is a humectant - a substance that attracts and holds water. A single gram of HA can hold up to 6 liters of water, making it exceptionally effective at hydrating tissue. Your skin naturally contains HA, but production declines with age, contributing to dryness and loss of plumpness.

Molecular Weight Matters

HA comes in different molecular weights that determine where it works. High molecular weight HA (over 1000 kDa) sits on the skin surface, forming a moisture-retaining film. Low molecular weight HA (under 50 kDa) penetrates deeper into the epidermis, hydrating from within. Multi-weight formulations provide benefits at multiple skin levels simultaneously.

Very low molecular weight HA (fragmented HA, under 10 kDa) can penetrate deeply but may trigger inflammatory responses in some people. If a HA product causes redness or irritation, the molecular weight may be too low for your skin.

The Humidity Problem

Here is what most people do not know: humectants draw moisture from wherever it is available. In humid environments, HA pulls water from the air into your skin - ideal. In dry environments (heated rooms, arid climates, airplane cabins), HA can pull water from deeper skin layers to the surface where it evaporates, actually dehydrating your skin.

The solution: always seal HA with an occlusive layer (moisturizer, oil, or cream) that prevents surface evaporation. Apply HA to damp skin (not dry), then immediately follow with moisturizer. In very dry environments, consider skipping HA entirely and using occlusives directly.

How to Use It Effectively

Apply to damp skin immediately after cleansing (while water is still present on the surface). Layer a moisturizer or oil on top within 60 seconds to seal the hydration. Use morning and evening for best results. HA serums work well under sunscreen, makeup, and other treatments.

Realistic Expectations

Topical HA provides temporary plumping and hydration - it does not permanently change skin structure or reverse aging. The effects last as long as you continue using it. It is an excellent hydration tool but not a miracle anti-aging ingredient. For structural skin changes, retinoids and vitamin C are more effective long-term investments.
